What’s water damage like in North Richmond Hill?
It’s older-house water damage plus sewer-backup exposure. 11418 has wood-frame Victorians with plaster walls and aging plumbing, detached one- and two-family homes with cellars, and a Jamaica Avenue shopping strip, and it sits right next to the area covered in the 2026 Kew Gardens and Richmond Hill sewer backup reporting.
About 37,600 people live in 11418 per the 2020 census. Richmond Hill grew in the late 1800s as a planned suburb, and Queen Anne houses with wraparound wood porches still line streets near the park. Houses like these dry differently from newer construction, and old supply lines and roofs are common leak sources. See structural drying services for why.
What does the 2026 sewer backup reporting say?
In October 2026 the Queens Chronicle reported that more than 100 residents of Kew Gardens and Richmond Hill signed a petition about raw sewage and stormwater coming through floor drains, toilets and showers during storms on May 20 and August 20, 2026. The reported area ran from Audley Street to Jamaica Avenue. Licensed contractors cited in the petition attributed the backups to a failure of the city’s sewer main. The DEP said its inspections found the infrastructure working as expected and named locations it examined: 116th Street between 84th and 85th avenues, 122nd Street from 85th Avenue to Hillside Avenue, and 85th Avenue from 116th Street to Bessemer Street.
The DEP and Councilmember Lynn Schulman scheduled a flood prep town hall at Borough Hall for October 21, with free flood prep kits including sump pumps, barriers and sensor alarms. Residents asked for infrastructure work, more catch basins and a city-funded backwater valve program. The petition said insurance did not cover their costs. That matters if you’re calling from here: check your policy for sewer backup coverage, and see sewage and sewer backup cleanup.
Which parts of North Richmond Hill do we cover?
Calls come from across 11418. Here’s how each area tends to play out.
North Richmond Hill
The northern half of the neighborhood runs up toward Park Lane South and the Kew Gardens line. Detached houses with finished or lived-in cellars are the common building, and cellar flooding is the main call. If water’s coming up a floor drain, report it to 311 and see basement flood cleanup.
Richmond Hill Historic Area
This is the Victorian core. The Richmond Hill Historical Society, founded in 1999, works to protect the neighborhood’s late 1800s houses and civic landmarks, and the Church of the Resurrection, the first church built in Richmond Hill, stands near Lefferts Boulevard and 85th Avenue. Historic houses often have plaster walls and original woodwork, so cleanup has to protect what’s worth saving. See ceiling water damage restoration for plaster ceilings and water damage repair for hiring a licensed contractor for the rebuild.
Forest Park Adjacent Area
Forest Park covers more than 500 acres and its southern end runs along Park Lane South. A city planning study of the area describes the blocks closest to the park, south of Park Lane South, as low-density detached single-family housing. Large trees near houses can send roots into private sewer lines, which is a common cause of blockages, and a licensed plumber can camera the line. If water comes through a roof or window in wind-driven rain, see storm water damage restoration.
Jamaica Avenue Corridor
The J and Z trains run elevated above Jamaica Avenue, with stations at 104th Street and 121st Street in Richmond Hill. The avenue is the main commercial street, with storefronts, offices and apartments above shops. A leak upstairs often lands in a store below. See commercial water damage restoration and burst pipe water damage cleanup.
Metropolitan Avenue Area
A city planning study notes commercial activity on Metropolitan Avenue at 118th Street and where Hillside and Metropolitan avenues meet in the southeast corner. This area borders Kew Gardens, so if you’re here and have a backup, you’re near the zone the 2026 reporting covered. Tell us the cross streets. Apartments and small businesses may share a building.
Lefferts Boulevard Area
Lefferts Boulevard is 119th Street and runs through Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park. Kew Gardens’ commercial center is on Lefferts between Austin Street and Metropolitan Avenue, and the Richmond Hill Library is on Lefferts north of Jamaica Avenue. Blocks along it mix apartments, houses and shops, so building type changes the plan; tell us which you’re in.
Hillside Avenue Area
Hillside Avenue is the southern edge of Kew Gardens and runs through north Richmond Hill. The DEP’s inspection stops included 122nd Street from 85th Avenue to Hillside Avenue. If you’ve had a backup near here, keep your 311 complaint number, photos and dates. They help both the insurer and any later claim.
Park Lane South Area
Park Lane South skirts the southern end of Forest Park, and the Victorian core near it has seen renewed preservation efforts. Homes here are often older and well-kept, and a water loss to a historic house needs a careful contractor. Ask providers about experience with plaster, old flooring and original trim.
101st Street Area
The area between 101st Street, Myrtle Avenue and Jamaica Avenue is zoned for detached one- and two-family homes, per a city planning study. That points to the common Richmond Hill pattern: a house with a cellar and a boiler or water heater down below. Water heater leaks are an easy fix if caught early; see water damage mitigation for documenting one.
