How is a flood different from a leak or a basement problem?
Where the water comes from decides the work. A leak starts inside and is usually clean at first. A basement flood is below grade and covered on basement flood cleanup. A flood is water that comes in from outside at street level, through doors, thresholds, garage openings and low windows. It carries whatever was on the street.
When does Queens flood fast?
When rain falls faster than the drains take it. The DEP says city sewers are built for about 1.5 to 1.75 inches of rain per hour. The National Weather Service recorded hourly rates of 1.5 to 2 inches in parts of Queens on May 20, 2026. When catch basins and sewers fill, water pools in low spots and finds the lowest door. Summer 2026 flash flood warnings had city officials telling basement-apartment residents to keep a bag packed.
What should you do when floodwater is coming in?
- Get to a higher floor. Don’t stay in a room with rising water.
- Stay away from electrical equipment in or near the water. Call Con Edison or an electrician about power.
- Never drive or walk through a flooded road. The DEP warns against it.
- Turn off gas appliances only if you can do it safely. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 and National Grid.
- Report street flooding to 311. If anyone is in danger, call 911.
- Photograph the water level inside and outside when it’s safe.
What does emergency flood cleanup involve?
- Safety assessment. Electrical, gas, structural and contamination hazards.
- Water removal. Pumps and extractors. See emergency water removal for methods.
- Remove contaminated materials. Carpet, pad, insulation and soaked drywall that floodwater touched, as contaminated materials are generally discarded.
- Clean and disinfect. Hard surfaces and framing that can stay.
- Dry. Equipment and readings until dry. See structural drying services.
- Document. Records for the insurer and any flood claim.
Why is floodwater treated as contaminated?
Because it mixes street runoff, drain water and sometimes sewage, which the industry classifies as the most contaminated category. That means porous materials that got wet are generally removed instead of dried in place. It’s the same reasoning behind sewage and sewer backup cleanup.
Ground-floor flooding in homes and storefronts
Street-level flooding hits thresholds, entry halls, garages, first-floor apartments and stores. Floors there are often hardwood, tile or laminate over a subfloor, and the water gets under all of it. Stores add inventory, shelving and equipment. If you run a shop, see commercial water damage restoration. Along Liberty and Atlantic avenues in South Richmond Hill, storefronts open right onto the sidewalk, so water from the street has a straight path in.
Does insurance cover flood damage?
Usually not under a standard homeowner’s policy. Flood coverage is generally a separate policy, either through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private insurer. NYC guidance notes NFIP coverage generally takes effect 30 days after purchase, so it has to be in place before a storm. Sewer backup is its own category and often needs an endorsement. Call your insurer and ask which applies.
How much does emergency flood cleanup cost?
We don’t quote prices. It follows the area flooded, how contaminated the water is, how much material is removed, how many days of drying and whether the call is overnight. Ask for a written, itemized estimate.
If you need emergency water damage restoration in Richmond Hill, call (929) 219-1202. For wind and roof entry points rather than street water, see storm water damage restoration.
